9 Abbey, Lynn Behind Time
Ace Books July 1, 2001 0-441-00831-3 Mass Market Pa used; very good
Another compact and literate fantasy novel from Abbey that, like some of he r other work, is likely to receive less attention than it deserves. To be s ure, the plot is of a basic and venerable type: Emma Merrigan has received magical powers from her long-lost mother, whom she must now rescue by means of something not too far short of invading hell and engaging in a duel of magic with its denizens and overlords. Thanks to superior characterization, perspicuously detailed settings, a carefully and intelligently worked out system of good and evil magic, and brisk pacing, especially of the invasion of hell, even seasoned fantasy readers won't find it easy to put the book down until the last page is turned. Abbey gets extra credit for honorably, skillfully curbing the bloating tendency of most fantasy fiction these days .

26 Adair, Cherry Kiss and Tell
Ivy Books September, 2000 0-449-00683-2 Paperback used: excellent
Amazon.com Newcomer Cherry Adair takes no prisoners with her sexy romp of a novel, Kiss and Tell. Deftly combining suspense, romance, and humor to can't-put-this-book-down effect, Adair introduces readers to Marnie Wright, a computer analyst in the midst of a career crisis, and Jake Dolan, a top secret military agent running for his life. Jake's heavy-handed attempts to intimidate Marnie into leaving the mountaintop retreat where she's contemplating her next career move don't faze Marnie, whose four overprotective older brothers have left her testosterone-averse--unless of course the commands are issuing from the most sensual pair of lips she's ever clapped her blue eyes on. It's lust at first sight for the mountain man who has no time for blondes, no matter how nubile, and for feisty Marnie, who aggravates Jake even as she saves his bacon when the bad guys come after him.

29 Adair, Dennis Kanata(bk#1 The Story of Canada)
Avon Books February 1982 0-380-77826-2 Paperback used: good
Kanata, Bitter Shield, Thundergate, Wildfires and Victoria tell the story o f Canada's settlement from sea to sea through the lives of two Scots famili es who leave Scotland after the Battle of Culloden. Janet Cameron MacLean, believing the man she loves to be dead, wants a new start in a new country. Mathew Macleod searches for Janet and, being unable to find her, assumes s he too is lost. A few years later they are reunited in Quebec, and the saga of the MacLeans and the Macleods begins. Each volume is a story in itself, and each involves cross-border action as families are divided by French and English loyalties, and later by the American Revolution. The exciting history of Canada is revealed in the westward struggle. It becomes clear that Canada is as much a product of the American Revolution as the United States.

The last thing Tess Montana needs is a meddlesome lawman on her trail. 57 Adler, Elizabeth In a Heartbeat
Delacorte Press Dece, ber, 2000 0-385-33383-8 Hardcover used; both book/jacket very good
From Publishers Weekly Acceptable as a substitute for daytime soap opera viewing, if nothing else, this contemporary romantic thriller fails to live up to favorite Adler tit les like Peach and Fortune Is a Woman. Heavy on the romance and light on th e thrills, the writer's 13th novel is all lather and featherweight intrigue . Ed Vincent, a real estate tycoon with a mysterious past, has been shot by a would-be assassin and lies comatose in a New York hospital. His love int erest, Georgia peach Melba Merrydew, also a target, comes to grieve by Ed's bedside. Enter Marco Camelia, a handsome homicide detective, who, with Mel ba's help, investigates Ed's shadowy past, all the while falling in lust wi th Melba's Southern charm and sun-kissed legs. The one-dimensional characte rs are modeled not on real-life counterparts but on their movie star protot ypes (Adler reminds the reader a number of times that Melba looks like Shar on Stone and Marco is a ringer for Pacino, while Ed owns a building named V incent Towers, la Trump Tower). The slow-moving, clich -ridden tale is not rescued by the action-packed finaleDtoo little, too late. Even Adler's fan s may find her latest outing uninspiring, although chances are they'll go a long for the ride; but Adler won't pick up many new readers based on this t itle. (Dec.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Adler's latest thriller offers a clever twist on an old theme. Millionaire Ed Vincent is nearly killed by four bullets to the chest. As Vincent's lover, Zelda Merrydew, helps a charming homicide detective investigate the attempted murder, she uncovers things about the man she

Island Books July 1, 1994 0-440-21657-5 Paperback used: very good
Adler ( Fortune Is a Woman ) keeps her latest, ingeniously plotted saga fai rly racing toward its conclusion. In 1883, Lily Molyneux, daughter of a nob le Irish family, is raped by the scion of an equally prominent family. Preg nant and afraid that she will be forced to marry her molester, she names as the father the lowly stableboy Finn O'Keeffe, hoping that she will then be allowed to remain unwed. But her plan backfires: Lily is banished and Finn and his brother Daniel must flee for their lives. All three find themselve s on the same boat to America. Their heady and romantic adventures unfold a gainst a panorama of Irish country estates, squalid Boston slums and the Ne w York City bustle of Broadway and Wall Street. The author brackets this tu rn-of-the-century drama with a present-day mystery: real-estate tycoon Bob Keeffe, Finn's descendant, has died of a gunshot wound and been ruled a sui cide. His daughter, however, is sure that he was murdered, and she reaches back into the past for clues. Spiced with betrayal, revenge, lust and scand al, this is an intoxicating brew, served with panache.

Lara Lewis, the befuddled protagonist of this coming-of-middle-age novel, i s a curvy, knockout 45-year-old, unaware of her beauty. All she notices is her aging, not her assets, and it doesn't help that her snooty doctor husba nd, Bill, is probably having an affair with his pert, younger blonde collea gue. He blows off a planned second honeymoon in Paris to go to China with M elissa, ostensibly on a medical mission. Devastated, Lara goes to their bea ch house to think. While there, she discovers repairs that need to be done and calls contractor Dan, who turns out to be a 32-year-old Adonis who appr eciates her just as she is.
