Blackstock, Terri Emerald Windows Zondervan October 1, 2001 0-310-22807-7 Trade Size Pap used; good The second Christian novel this year (Linda Dorrell's True Believers is the other) to focus on the renovation of a church and, in particular, the fema le protagonist's design of its stained glass windows, this story features a lovestruck pair of artists who are supposed to be offbeat and tortured, bu t in fact are ill-defined and bland. Brooke, a 20-something stained glass a rtist who, amid scandal, left her hometown immediately after her high schoo l graduation, comes back to do a job and face the gossips who drove her awa y. Unfortunately for readers, the scandal a misinterpreted hug between stud ent and teacher has no teeth, and it strains credulity to think that any to wn, even the caricaturish Hayden, Mo., could make so much of so little. Als o problematic is that the former teacher, who is only six years Brooke's se nior, is motivated to convert her to Christianity mostly because he wants t o marry her, but would never marry an unbeliever. Stereotypes abound, inclu ding a wealthy, almost mechanically mean-spirited villainess and an Italian family complete with a dead grandfather whose clich‚d proverbs are remembe red in over-the-top dialect ("You put-a care and-a love into everything you do, Nicky, and that's-a quality"). Blackstock generates enough interest in these characters and their predicaments to keep the pages turning, but the novel's predictable conclusion is telegraphed from the first page. Blair, Leona Fascination Bantam June 1, 1998 0-553-57229-6 Paperback used; very good Did the Victorians think about anything but sex? Well, occasionally food an d money, if we are to believe the portrait of the year 1900 as painted by B lair (Privilege). Her witty transatlantic drawing-room comedy digresses to the bedroom on any excuse. This is no mere sex romp, however. The tale of t hree strong-willed American women who fall for craggily handsome financier Steven James on a steamship crossing to London, Fascination intelligently p arses the differences between love and lust and the conflicts between duty and happiness. Porcelain-beautiful 18-year-old Cynthia Cunningham craves St ephen's touch, but she is under her father's orders, and the rules of the d ay, to swap her virginity and fortune for a high-profile British marriage. Her self-assured aunt, the sublime Miranda Cunningham, has an affair with S tephen and knows he's The One, but if she follows her heart, her entire fam ily will be ruined. Charming suffragist Kitt McAllister, who does battle on behalf of a raped stewardess and other vulnerable working women, wants Ste phen in spite of herself, until she suspects that he, not Paul Cunningham, is the father of the child Miranda is carrying. The male characters never c ome alive as the women do, but with the exception of the egregious Hobart C unningham, the real estate baron who is Cynthia's father, the men, too, are shown as victims of soul-stifling conventions and repressive mores. Blair' s one weakness is relying on long menus and other lists to create period at mosphere, rather than well-crafted description. Blake, Jennifer Arrow to the Heart(hardcover) Ballantine Books June 8, 1993 0-449-90824-0 Hardcover hardcover w/dustjacket; good Blake ( Wildest Dreams ) is at her best in this historical romance, a fine piece of unashamed escapism set in antebellum Louisiana. Katrine Castlereag h is dutiful wife to the mysteriously incapacitated Giles, whose mad desire for an heir leads to a dastardly scheme to mate her with the victor of his yearly medieval-style tournament. True-hearted Rowan de Blanc comes to the tourney for reasons of his own: believing Katrine to be responsible for hi s half-brother's death, he wants to learn more about her. Although attracte d to each other, the pair refuse to fulfill Giles's plan--so he imprisons t hem, naked, in a tower on the grounds of his estate. They decide to cheat G iles by becoming lovers but avoiding pregnancy, thanks to Rowan's training in Arabian techniques of "self-control." True love and sensuality are awake ned, only to be threatened by a fire in the tower. Blake's language is as l ush and sensual as her protagonists' affair, although there are too many po rcelain-edged teeth and coral-rose nipples, and the sex is so prodigious an d frequent that it begins to bore. However, the intriguing combination of p assion and intellect in both Katrine and Rowan gives some edge to a story s atisfyingly capped by several neat plot twists. Price:
