3 Jance, J. A. Day of the Dead (hardcover)
William Morrow August 1, 2004 0-688-13823-3 / 9780688138233 Hardcover Hardcover; excellent
FIRST EDITIONJance's third suspense thriller to feature ex-sheriff Brandon Walker and his family (after Hour of the Hunter and Kiss of the Bees) deftly mixes Native American mythology with a harrowing plot. An old Tohono O'odham woman, Emma Orozco, asks Walker for help in solving the brutal murder of her daughter, Roseanne, who was slain in 1970. Walker is able to take on the challenge because of his membership in TLC, The Last Chance, a privately funded agency that looks into old, unsolved crimes. This ingenious arrangement allows for great flexibility in the action of the story. As Walker searches for clues in Roseanne's death, he comes across similar murders-each with no leads, each involving a dismembered body left alongside a road in the Southwest. The reader learns more and more about the killers, the sexually voracious, utterly amoral Gayle Stryker and her husband, Larry, a truly effective pair of monsters. Meanwhile, Walker's dear friend Fat Crack Ortiz, a Tohono O'odham man, is dying of complications from diabetes. Most of Walker's friends, in fact, are Indians, as is his adopted daughter, Lani. He draws not so much knowledge as strength and perspective from them-no mumbo-jumbo here, only believable sensitivity.

But that doesn't stop her from giving a terrific speech about why selling Girl Scout cookies gave her confidence, or worrying about afriend trying to adopt a child in China, or even finally beginning to understand what makes her annoying mother tick. 6 Jance, J.A. Devil's Claw(Hardcover)
William Morrow July 3, 2000 0-380-97501-7 / 9780380975013 Hardcover hardcover w/dustjacket; good
A missing teenager and an octogenarian found dead of apparently natural causes are pretty run-of-the-mill cases in Bisbee, Arizona, where Sheriff Joanna Brady is focusing on the last-minute details of her upcoming wedding. In this latest outing in Judith Jance's Brady series, the connection betweenthe two events is a thin one. In the author's capable hands, however, it'senough to drive this well-plotted mystery to a credible conclusion.Fifteen-year-old Lucy Ridder dreads her mother's release from prison, eight years after she was convicted of killing Lucy's beloved father. Lucy is aware that her mother's priority is not a family reunion but the retrieval of a mysterious diskette entrusted to Lucy by her dad shortly before his death. After inadvertently witnessing her mother's brutal slaying by a stranger who's also hot after the diskette, Lucy vanishes. It takes most of the novel for Joanna to figure out that Lucy's disappearance is tied to her mother's murder, and for good reasons. Besides the distraction of her pending nuptials, the sheriff has been accused of killing her elderly, beloved neighbor for financial gain. Because the reader knows the truth of both situations very early in the game, Joanna's delayed awareness doesn't pack as much wallop as it might. The greater mystery is whether she'll strangle her wedding-obsessed mother before she and her too-good-to-be-true fiancé make it to the altar. --Jane Adams

7 Jance, J. A. Exit Wounds
Avon August 1, 2004 0-380-80471-9 / 9780380804719 Mass Market Pa used; good
Adult/High School-Sheriff Joanna Brady investigates the murder of Carol Mossman, who lived alone in the desert and was shot with an antique gun. Her 17 dogs died, too, due to an intense buildup of heat in the trailer. The investigation leads to the deceased woman's siblings, grandmother, and father, and two murdered female reporters. As the facts come together, it becomesapparent that the victim's father raped his daughters, impregnating at least two. While working on the case, Brady deals with the local animal activist group and illegal immigrants, all while running for reelection. While none of the scenes depict details of the incestuous relationships, the lastingeffect of abuse becomes a major point of the story. The human abuse in turn leads back to the topic of animal abuse, painting a sad picture of the horrors of both. But Jance manages to keep the atmosphere positive, with lotsof action, energy, and realism along the way, and Brady's personal thoughts and beliefs give a perspective to the events.

9 Jance, J. A. Justice Denied(Hardcover)
William Morrow July 24, 2007 0-06-054092-3 / 9780060540920 Hardcover used; good; ex-library
STATED FIRST EDITIONIn bestseller Jance's complex, overlong 18th J.P. Beaumont novel (after Long Time Gone), the Seattle special homicide investigator works three cases simultaneously. The first involves the murder of a wrongly imprisoned ex-con, the second the disappearance of a whistle-blowing electronics engineer who vanished the day Mount Saint Helen's erupted in 1980, the third the deaths of several former felons. Meanwhile, Mel Soames, Beau's female colleague and lover, looks into the unexplained deaths of recently released sex crimes perpetrators as well as the disappearance of a childhood friend's abusive father. Unbelievably, all Beaumont's and Mel's assignments meld into one, except for the case of the missing engineer. The detectives are helped by the delightful Todd Hatcher, a young forensic economist and statistical analyst, but the exceptionally busy plot, host of characters, incredible coincidences, ignored clues and red herrings add up to a less than stellar effort from the usually reliable Jance. 11 Jance, J. A. Paradise Lost(Hardcover)
William Morrow August 7, 2001 0-380-97729-X / 9780380977291 Hardcover used; good; ex-library
Joanna Brady returns in J.A. Jance's ninth adventure featuring the Arizonasheriff. Joanna and Butch, her new husband, are trying to build their dreamhouse, adjust to their marriage, and cope with the preteen mood swings ofJoanna's 12-year-old daughter, Jenny. During a Girl Scout camping trip to Cochise County, Jenny and another girl sneak out of their tents after lights out to have a cigarette and stumble on the body of a murder victim. Joanna is initially more concerned about her daughter's misbehavior than the murder at Apache Pass--after all, smoking can kill you--but then Dora Matthews, Jenny's coconspirator, is killed. Joanna's fear that her daughter mightbe in the killer's sights adds an extra dose of adrenaline to her efforts to find the man who left the body for Jenny and Dora to find. Add that worryto the sheriff's suspicion that Butch may be having an affair with a former girlfriend and you have the makings of a typical Joanna Brady novel: longon intelligence, empathy, and humanity and short on shootouts and suspense. Jance's other series, featuring Seattle cop J.P. Beaumont, features moreintricate plotting and louder firepower. Brady's not as complex as Beaumont or as fully developed a character, but she leads with her heart, and herstruggles to balance her personal and professional life bring interest.

13 Jance, J. A. Tombstone Courage(hardcover)
William Morrow & Co June 1994 0-688-13247-2 / 9780688132477 Hardcover used; both book/jacket very good
Introduced in Desert Heat, young Joanna Brady is a no-nonsense widow running for sheriff in the new wild West. In the gritty mining and ranching community of Bisbee, Ariz., Joanna hopes to take over the office held by her husband when he was killed by a drug dealer's hit man six weeks before. HollyPatterson, a tormented substance abuser, has returned with her lawyer and hypnotherapist to file an unsavory personal injury suit against her feisty, octogenarian father, Harold. Though he appears to be a decent man, Harold clearly has a secret, but it may not be the one Holly is suggesting. As Joanna faces a tough, and sexist, election campaign, she must also come to terms with her widowhood, her overbearing mother and the complicated reactionsof her now fatherless nine-year-old daughter. Jance, who also writes the J.P. Beaumont mysteries, maintains generally deft control of her touchy, trendy material. While some of the cast seem stock and the ending is somewhatoverwrought, Joanna is engaging and credible, and the novel's pace is unflagging.
