FIRST PRINTINGSet in 1942, the sixth book (following Line of Fire ) in Griffin's series about The Corps revolves around a war bond tour featuring Marine heroes of the Guadalcanal campaign. Series fans will recognize the central characters, among them Marine general and presidential troubleshooter Fleming Pickering, his fighter pilot son Pick, and movie mogul Homer Dillon, a Marine for the duration. Griffin has Marine Corps lore and trivia down pat, and he uses the bond-tour story line to convey the public-relations aspects of modern war. Essentially, however, the novel succeeds because the alcoholic and amorous exploits of its stateside heroes could be mink-lined wish fulfillment for the fantasies of the average soldier--most of the "close combat" here takes place in various bedrooms.

That there's an Establishment in any big city cop shop is no surprise, butthe pols, police, press, and prosecutors who hang out together in W.E.B. Griffin's Philadelphia are so tightly connected that there's hardly any roomto breathe in this Badge of Honor thriller. While a couple of minor characters from outside this old-boys' network make a few cursory appearances, plus the obligatory perp, it's mostly an inside story about golden boy Matt Payne, Main Line scion and third generation cop who's just been promoted to Homicide, and his mentors, friends, and family. The perp is a clever psychopath who rapes and murders his way across country while he's buying and selling exotic cars. Griffin fills in the story with plenty of carefully detailed department procedures in this newest in one of his many bestselling series (Honor Bound, Men at War, Brotherhood of War, The Corps). Justice triumphs and, of course, there's plenty of hero worship and not a flawed cop on the force, which won't surprise or displease the author's legion of true blue fans.

Their mission: to establish a clandestine weather station and rescue a wayward group of Americans who fled China after the Japanese invasion in 1941 and have been lost in Mongolia for nearly two years. While the plot teases with a promise of suspense in an exotic and forbidding locale, the reality is that not a shot is fired, not a cliffhanger is encountered and three-fourths of the narrative is set safely back in the States, where the characters spend most of their time drinking, womanizing, disobeying orders and wringing their hands over how they can rejoin the war. Under the leadership of fatherly Brigadier General Fleming Pickering, a kind of Marine den daddy, they do return, although the result is anticlimactic.

This time, along with other jobs, the OSS must drop agents into the Belgian Congo and smuggle out ore to use in making atomic bombs. Secrecy is all, since the Germans also may well be devising their own atomic weapons. Shrewd, sharp, rousing entertainment.

Between bed hopping and libidinous musings, intrepid secret agents Major Richard Caniday (who's really not a major) and Eric Fulmar, members of the fledging OSS, aim to smuggle out of Germany the scientist whose knowledge of metallurgy holds the key to the Third Reich's development of jet engines. The professor has a lovely daughter, of course, who is being sexually used by the sleazy Nazis; she is also used by double agents in the German high command as a tool to help undermine Hitler's mad schemes. Other plot lines explore Fulmar's mission in Morocco and the Allies' attempt to develop a "flying bomb" of their own. Cameos by such historical figures as William "Wild Bill" Donovan, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., David Niven and Peter Ustinov lend color to a story so cluttered with specific detail concerning uniforms, automobiles, airplanes and women's silk undergarments that readers may wonder how the war was won by people so obsessed by military protocol and mammary glands.

book #3 in the "Badge of Honor Series"The "victim" of the title is a drug dealer named Tony DeZego, but this book's real victim is the reader, who is dragged through a flimsy plot that's overwhelmed by tedious, irrelevant details about the Philadelphia police department's uniforms, organization, chain of command and internal politics. The story revolves around two shooting incidents. In the first, an heiress is wounded and "mafioso scumbag" DeZego killed by a professional assassin. (The reasons for this unlikely pairing never become clear.) Later, a young police officer is found dead in a gutter. These two brief bursts of action notwithstanding, Griffin cannot be lured away from his fascination with the intricacies of policedom to bother solving the crimes. A paragraph tacked on at the end indicates that DeZego's assassin was killed when he bungled a job; the mystery of the murdered police officer quietly peters out.
