"Somewhere in time" Rhiannon of "the Fair Folk" relinquished her magic powers to marry a Welsh mortal, Pwyll. But he betrayed her trust and, as a punishment, he is to be reincarnated repeatedly, searching during every life for the soul of Rhiannon until he finds her and she forgives him. In 1060, Wynne of Gwernach (Rhiannon's soul) marries Madoc of Powys-Wenwynwyn (Pwyll's soul). In this life, Madoc somehow ends up with the magic powers. He concocts a brew to help Wynne remember their shared past life and, of course, she freely forgives him. But then Wynne (who is more compassionate than intelligent) resolves to patch up a feud between Madoc and his evil half-brother Brys. She visits Brys, who, true to form, seizes her, selling her and her unborn child into slavery. This puts Wynne into a snit, but her owner is kind and a terrific lover, so she adapts. Set in the early 12th century, between Henry Beauclerc's ascension to the English throne in 1100 and his eventual victory over his older brother DukeRobert of Normandy at the battle of Tinchebrai in 1106, Small's (Skye O'Malley) latest mixes a goodly bit of history with lots of her signature sex?some gruffly randy and some sinisterly practiced. Hugh Fauconier, a childhoodfriend of Henry Beauclerc, is rewarded with Langston, the lands of his Saxon ancestors. Like all good things, they come with fine print, in this casethe late Norman lord's daughter, known with varying degrees of disaffection as Isabelle or "the Belle from Hell." But Hugh's a good sort and managesto woo the headstrong young woman, marry her and father a son before goingoff on business for his king. When he doesn't return, Belle sets out in search of him. She fights off the lustful King Henry in one of the more entertaining sections before heading to Brittany, where she finds the amnesiac Hugh in thrall to two decadent descendants of Vivienne (as in Merlin and). Belle herself becomes a strangely willing sex slave as she attempts, somewhatleisurely, to save Hugh.

Ballantine Books March 8, 1994 0-345-37392-8 / 9780345373922 Trade Size Pap used: good
BOTTOM RIGHT HAND CORNER CLIPPED, OTHERWISE IN VERY NICE CONDITIONSmall's latest that picks up where Blaze Wyndham (1988) left off. The court of Henry VIII offers an unending supply of plot and counterplot to fill the interludes between heavy breathing. When this installment begins, Blaze uses her past intimacy with Henry to secure for her eldest daughter, Nyssa, a position as maiden to the newly betrothed Princess of Cleves. But no one pretends that Nyssa goes merely to serve the queen: ``Once you find a husband, you will marry and live happily ever after. That is the whole purpose of your coming to court.'' When Henry seeks an annulment because he finds his new wife too unappetizing to mount, he turns his lascivious attention to Nyssa and the equally beautiful, but witless, Catherine Howard. Catherine's uncle recognizes the power he'll gain if his niece becomes the next queen of England, so he drugs Nyssa and plops her in his grandson Varian's bed for Henry to discover. Varian doesn't get too upset when Henry orders them to marry immediately. After all, he's been in love with Nyssa from first sight, but he didn't have a chance because years earlier he had been accused (falsely) of a rape. At the same time, Nyssa, who thought she'd marry for love, quickly discovers that lust is almost as good a reason. All is threatened within a year when Catherine takes a lover; Nyssa must think fast to save her husband, for the king seeks to punish every Howard he can find.

9 Small, Bertrice Philippa
NAL Trade October 5, 2004 0-451-21299-1 / 9780451212993 Trade Size Pap used; excellent
Small (Rosamond) delivers another lusty historical, this one set during thereign of King Henry VIII before the bloodletting begins. Now of an age tobe wed, Philippa Meredith, eldest daughter of the fair Rosamond Bolton of Friarsgate, is beautiful, canny and stubborn, adept in the ways of court, but not in the ways of the heart. Phillipa's beloved and most colorful uncle,Lord Cambridge, buys her a southern property to make her a more desirablebride after her childhood intended decides on the church instead of marriage. Serendipitously, Crispin St. Claire, the earl of Witton and an interested party in the property, is also an ideal husband candidate and, in returnfor a rich and well-connected but socially unimportant girl, gets the property he wants as well as a suitable bride. Crispin and Philippa find pleasure in each other's company in and out of bed, but Philippa's headstrong nature and a plot to assassinate the king may destroy the young couple's happiness before it has a chance to blossom. The ever-popular Small knows just what makes her readers swoon and, despite some clumsy, anachronistic prose ("‘What is the emergency that I have been summoned to come with such haste?' he asked his cousin. ‘The children are alright, aren't they?'") and overuse of clichés such as "love rod," she manages to craft engaging characters as well.

Upon their return to Friarsgate, Rosamund realizes that she wants tobe more than Patrick's mistress. He reminds her that they should be grateful for what they have, and while she agrees, "beneath her acquiescence angerwas beginning to burn. She loved this man, and she always would.
