3 Schurfranz, Vivian Julie(Sunfire #20)
Scholastic April 1988 0-590-42021-6 / 9780590420211 Paperback used: very good
Julie is courted by cheeky Irishman Dylan O'Kelly and staid surveyor SamuelHarper. It's obvious from the beginning which one gets her, so the suspense comes in Julie's derring-do, as she foils an Indian attack, crosses a swaying railroad trestle in a blinding storm, and hides in a cave to overhearthe villain plan an avalanche that temporarily cripples Dylan. The characters are cutouts, to such a degree that the book seems like one of those old-fashioned silent movies in which the audience hisses the villain. The delirious tone is heavy going, but the historical background (Utah, 1868) is well portrayed, if very simplified.

6 Schurfranz, Vivian Merrie
Scholastic Paperbacks July 1, 1987 0-590-41000-8 / 9780590410007 Paperback used; very good
(Sunfire, No 25);Merrie, a feisty heroine during the time of the Mayflower landing at Plymouth, has two handsome boys to choose from. Schurfranz offers lots of preposterous plot contrivances, melodrama, and plenty of gloppy dialogue (``The salt spray agrees with you. Your hair is like a golden cloud''). The pace is relentless; the historical aspect has been well researched; there's a sense of place; and, most important, there's lots of romance. After all, young teens don't sigh over these books for the description of the Thanksgiving menu.
