| 2. | Rule, Ann Every Breath You Take Free Press January 14, 200 Hardcover; w/j hardcover w/dustjacket; good The latest from respected true crime veteran Rule (And Never Let Her Go, et c.) walks readers through the tortured life and ugly murder of Sheila Bellu sh, a woman relentlessly pursued by her sexually obsessed ex-husband, Allen Van Houte. The crime scene is horrific: Bellush lies dead in the kitchen w hile her toddler quadruplets are left to walk naked through her blood. Bell ush had long warned close friends that she feared her ex-husband's reprisal s and went so far as to request "if I'm not here... find Ann Rule and have her write my story." Rule, in classic form, meticulously re-creates the pro saic lives of her characters, charting one woman's pleasantly humdrum exist ence undermined by a man bent on making a fortune though defaulting on bank loans and pedestrian cons, such as swindling family members. After he lure d Bellush into his world of sexual play, she left him, and he hired a man t o kill her. The subsequent fallout included a complex and lengthy inquiry b y investigators. There are no surprises here for the reader, though some ma y enjoy Rule's examination of Van Houte's manipulative and predatory nature . Essentially, this account is too long for its limited subject matter. (Oc t. 15)Forecast: Sixteen of Rule's 18 books have been bestsellers, and the F ree Press is pushing this with a 10-city tour, a 20-city radio satellite to ur and floor displays. But it's possible that less-than-favorable word-of-m outh will cut into sales. Price: 7.00 USD | See Full Description |

| 4. | Rule, Ann The Stranger Beside Me Signet Book June 1, 2001 Mass Market Pa used; very good Not long ago, true crime writer Ann Rule recalls lying on an operating tabl e. The anesthesiologist leaned over before putting her to sleep. "Ann," the anesthesiologist said softly, "tell me, what was Ted Bundy really like?" D espite meeting Florida's electric chair in 1989, the subject of Rule's best selling book continues to haunt her. Rule and Bundy were friends. They met in 1971 at a Seattle crisis clinic, where they shared the late shift answer ing a suicide hotline. Their subsequent conversations, meetings, and letter s spanned the rest of Bundy's life as he evolved into one of the century's most notorious serial killers. It's been 20 years since Rule first penned t his chilling account. But the story--and her 2000 update--will still have r eaders reaching for their Xanax. No gratuitous gore here; just the basic, b one-chilling evidence. In fact, like a protective mother shielding us from horrors too awful to mention, Rule seems to avoid delving too deeply into c rime scene descriptions. Price: 4.00 USD | See Full Description |
