There's enough melodrama in Michaels's newest offering (after No Place Like Home) to quench the thirst of soap opera devotees during a daytime drama d rought, and the author's fans will likely lap up every word. Her mother, Evie, neglects her; her stepbrother, Ronnie, sexually abuses her; and her fianc‚ may leave her if she doesn't have sex with him. The day Casey finally fight s back and stabs Ronnie in the leg, she miscarries his baby and comes to 10 years later in a mental hospital with no memory of her life before being a dmitted. Evie, now wealthy and married, greets Casey with little enthusiasm , as do the citizens of Sweetwater, Ga., and she can't help but wonder why. Slowly, she pieces together the lost details of her life with the help of Dr. Blake Hunter, a gorgeous family friend, but there are those who will do anything to keep her memories buried.

 9. Michaels, Fern  Crown Jewel (hardcover)
Atria December 2003 Hardcover used; both book/jacket very good
Perennial bestseller Michaels (The Future Scrolls; Trading Places; etc.) re turns with another paint-by-numbers story of love and redemption, this one set in Hollywood and Antigua. "Hollywood's Platinum Boy," Ricky Lam, has ki cked the drugs and booze, thanks in no small part to his stern brother and business manager, Philip, aka Philly. But when Philly is killed in a freak accident on set, Ricky discovers that his brother was the real actor in the family: nobody truly knew Philly at all. That's unfortunate, as the deceas ed Philly is the best-developed (and most interesting) character in this on e-dimensional cast. Ricky quits Hollywood to take over the family resort in Antigua, the Crown Jewel, and while spiffing it up for the first season's guests, he begins trying to uncover Philly's secret lives. He also tracks d own his now-grown sons, whom he's never met, falls in love with Philly's wi dow, Roxy, and takes in a young reporter-cum-bartender, the hyper Gracie. M ichaels presents reams of dull, cliched dialogue while zipping past moments of drama and emotion in stilted sum-ups ("Was he [serious]? Hell, yes, he was. He liked her. No, he loved her. He really did. He said so").

As usual with Michaels's sagas, the characters range from the kindhear ted to the blackhearted, with scarcely any halftones between. The plot verg es on the melodramatic, but it moves too quickly to pall. It helps for read ers to be interested in racing, since Michaels knows her Secretariat from h er Man O'War. The audience for her previous works is probably waiting at th e starting gate for this one.

 17. Michaels, Fern  Payback (Revenge of the Sisterhood)
Zebra Books September 2005 Mass Market Pa used: very good
Once the hallmark of macho fantasy, payback moves to the heart of modern ro mance in the spotty second installment of Michaels's Revenge of the Sisterh ood series, as the heroines of Weekend Warriors regroup for mission number 2. Revenge is a dish best served with cloth napkins and floral centerpiece, according to the Sisterhood members: heiress Myra Rutledge; her adopted da ughter, Nikki; Kathryn, the truck driver; Alexis, the African-American brok er turned personal shopper; Julia, the plastic surgeon; Isabelle, the psych ic; and Yoko, the nursery owner. It's vigilante justice for Julia this time : she's "contracted AIDS from her philandering senator husband." Frail Juli a gets strength from her friends and guidance from Myra's lover, Charles, a n ex-MI6 British operative and gourmet cook who plays a different kind of C harlie to Myra's Angels. ("Now, girls," says Myra, "let's devour this wonde rful luncheon Charles has so wonderfully prepared so we can get to work and do what we do best: going after the scoundrels who have turned your worlds upside down.") Charles arranges invites to an exclusive Washington party w here the gorgeous avengers kidnap the senator, but a good-looking assistant district attorney threatens to interfere with their plans (if only he and Nikki weren't out to right past wrongs, they could rekindle their old passi on!). Michaels grinds out bestsellers by concocting videogenic plots filled with strong heroines and effortless costume changes. Her fast-paced, senti mental, occasionally silly novel puts poetic justice first; romance must wa it for the next installment. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information,

 18. Michaels, Fern  Sara's Song
Zebra Books February 1, 199 Mass Market Pa used; good
Dallas Lord, a 38-year-old rock star asks Sara Killian, M.D., 39, to marry him (perhaps for the wrong reasons), and as a gift, he writes her a song. T hen, having supposedly died in a plane crash, Dallas chooses to drop out of sight in order to gain new perspective on his sense of his life and himsel f (he's tortured by undiagnosed dyslexia). In his absence, a bad-girl backu p singer claims rights to the song and attempts to murder Sara. After a bri ef attraction to Adam Lord, Dallas's older brother/manager, Sara is left to flounder in a midlife crisis as the brothers reunite, neither willing to a dmit their feelings for her. There's plenty of potential here?romantic stor y line, dynamic conflict?but Michaels's (Vegas Heat) latest is weakened by a poorly represented locale, abrupt transitions and the hero's maudlin moti vations. Michaels is aiming for the heartstrings here, but she manages to h it only a few chords.
