Taylor's latest, a sequel to Follow the Wind , is a predictable romance set in the American West circa 1886. Two U.S. government agents, Navarro Breed and Elizabeth Lawrence, who is hiding her identity under the name Bethany Wind, set out after Charles Cordell, a gunrunner who is selling weapons to the Mexican army, possibly even to Apache chief Geronimo. Cordell is the br other of Matt Cordell, who married Navarro's first love, Jessie. In a slow- moving opening rife with repetition, the two agents have a mock wedding and , as husband and wife, head for the Cordell ranch in Texas. After briefly r esisting each other's charms, Navarro and Bethany proceed to fall in love a nd, though they say they mistrust their feelings, enjoy a physical romance. With the appearance of Charles Cordell, who plans to bilk the Apaches of t heir silver, a bit of tension enters the story, but not much can rescue the anticlimactic ending in which "secrets" the reader already knows are "reve aled." Taylor's is a formulaic narrative, but her fans will undoubtedly be pleased.

A combination of dreams and destiny lead Chase Martin (aka Cloud Chaser), w ho's half-white, half-Native American, to return to his Plains tribe in 185 4. Having been presumed dead by the Red Shield Oglalas for over a decade (h e was raised by whites), he must prove his identity and reassure his tribe of his loyalty. Complicating matters are Chase's immediate attraction to th e beautiful Macha?the "Dawn" of the title?who is also desired by Chase's an gry and distrusting cousin Two Feathers. Once Chase wins the tribe's accept ance, he becomes instrumental as a spy, since he can easily pass in the whi te and the Native worlds. Self-consciously awkward prose and stilted dialog ue mar the adventure/romance mood Taylor attempts in the second volume of h er four-book Lakota Skies Series. Readers new to her sugary style may cring e rather than swoon every time Chase addresses Macha as "sunshine of my hea rt." In Taylor's hands, Chase's attempts to make the whites deal fairly wit h the Indians and to get the Indians to adopt a stronger survival strategy don't ring true enough to persuade readers to suspend their knowledge of wh at ultimately happened, to the Indians, beyond the pages of this melodrama.
