 1. King, Stephen  Carrie (Signet)
Signet Book December, 1994 Paperback used: very good
Why read Carrie? Stephen King himself has said that he finds his early work "raw," and Brian De Palma's movie was so successful that we feel like we h ave read the novel even if we never have. The simple answer is that this is a very scary story, one that works as well--if not better--on the page as on the screen. Carrie White, menaced by bullies at school and her religious nut of a mother at home, gradually discovers that she has telekinetic powe rs, powers that will eventually be turned on her tormentors. King has a way of getting under the skin of his readers by creating an utterly believable world that throbs with menace before finally exploding. He builds the tens ion in this early work by piecing together extracts from newspaper reports, journals, and scientific papers, as well as more traditional first- and th ird-person narrative in order to reveal what lurks beneath the surface of C hamberlain, Maine.

 2. King, Stephen  The Drawing of the Three
Plume November 1, 199 Trade Size Pap used: good
Elaborating at great length on Robert Browning's cryptic narrative poem "Ch ilde Roland to the Dark Tower Came," the second volume of King's post-Armag eddon epic fantasy presents the equally enigmatic quest of Roland, the worl d's last gunslinger, who moves through an apocalyptic wasteland toward the Dark Tower, "the linchpin that holds all of existence together." Although t hese minor but revealing books (which King began while still in college) ar e full of such adolescent portentousness, this is livelier than the first. Roland enters three lives in the alternate world of New York City: junkie a nd drug runner Eddie Dean, schizophrenic heiress Odetta Holmes and serial m urder Jack Mort. If King tells us too little about Roland, he gives us too much about these misfits who are variously healed or punished exactly as ex pected.
